Baba-Yaga: Russian for "Tranny Granny?"

There is going to be some sort of spectacular performance of a really weird Russian poetry-thingy on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in SC G030, and I'm inviting you to come, because 1) I helped with the rendering of the Russian words into something that resembles normal English (since I can't say I translated it, since I don't speak Russian, and thus I can't be held responsible if the translation is still a bit wacky), and 2) I have heard a rumour that there will be some great cross-dressing by a bearded actor. I wish Ricard were here to see it. That's all I can say.

A Fundraising Idea

Over a year ago Alex came up with the very creative plan to sell matryoska (I sure hope I spelled that right) dolls painted to look like famous linguists. For some reason I have never understood, that plan has not come to fruition. But now I have a simpler idea. In case you have not seen them peeking out at you (and creeping you out) from the window of the University Bookstore, they sell these little garden gnomes painted with the Purdue logo on their shirt. (It is not just a Purdue thing; the Texas gnome is very popular in my family). They seem to be trying to capitalise on the popularity of the roaming gnome (in turn ripped off from the movie "Amélie"). So why don't we do the same? You know where I am going with this: Gnome Chomsky. You can put him in your garden to help your trees grow. It would be a fitting tribute to a linguist of mythical proportions (and some might say an equally mythical theory).

Photos

We have a new photos section on the website. If you have any pictures you would like to see added, please first check that it is okay with other people who might be in the pictures (and who might be drunk or wearing funny hats), and then e-mail them to me. Otherwise we will all just look at four pictures of Jason (not that there's anything wrong with that). Pictures for the "about our members" page are welcome too.

Free Stuff from Ronnie

The following is a message from Ronnie Wilbur:

I'm sending these to you in your capacity as PLA webmaster for
students to check out and claim. The short 2 drawer piece is a
nightstand and there are 2 (matching). The white tower has one fixed
shelf in the middle and adjustable remaining shelves - it probably
would profit from a good scrubbing with cleansing powder like
BarKeeper's Friend (cheap and non-scratching). The dresser is very
old and has been in constant use, but has definitely seen better
days. There is damage on the top, which can be camouflaged with a
carefully placed lamp, tray, or decorative cloth.

Anyone who is interested can contact me directly by email. Thanks
for helping out again.
