A Fundraising Idea
Over a year ago Alex came up with the very creative plan to sell matryoska (I sure hope I spelled that right) dolls painted to look like famous linguists. For some reason I have never understood, that plan has not come to fruition. But now I have a simpler idea. In case you have not seen them peeking out at you (and creeping you out) from the window of the University Bookstore, they sell these little garden gnomes painted with the Purdue logo on their shirt. (It is not just a Purdue thing; the Texas gnome is very popular in my family). They seem to be trying to capitalise on the popularity of the roaming gnome (in turn ripped off from the movie "Amélie"). So why don't we do the same? You know where I am going with this: Gnome Chomsky. You can put him in your garden to help your trees grow. It would be a fitting tribute to a linguist of mythical proportions (and some might say an equally mythical theory).

Ha ha ha ha ha! Love it. ~Dani
ДА!! матрешки!! эта очнеь хорошая идея!! it's about the most beautiful idea i've ever heard of....i alone will buy 20 sets if we go through with this.
hmmmm....i got too excited about the nesting dolls to read the rest of the post. it is actually VERY VERY clever. so although my love of the russian language and culture is making me lean one way...the brilliance of a "Gnome Chomsky" leaves me undecided. i want both, but if i have to choose then I will forfeit my vote to the Vice President
I never said we have to choose. But it has been a year since Alex suggested the first idea, and not one of us has yet had the foresight to drive around to different farmer's markets, buy gourds that progressively decrease in size, hollow out the insides, and paint them. It's late October in Indiana--how hard could it be?
